I have to say that I ve never actually read chick lit before so I wasn t really sure what to expect from this novel I was pleasantly surprised to find a light hearted and fairly humorous tale of Kate Ryan, a woman whose husband has left her to go gallivanting all over the globe and is left alone to look after a young daughter Faced with rising debts and bills Kate agrees to take part in a new small scale reality TV show called Gold Coast Wives however, she quickly realises that perhaps she s bitten off a bit than she can chew Gold Coast Wives is written from the first person perspective of Kate, the protagonist of the novel, which allows you to really connect with her character Kate has real life problems and being forced into the company of three perfect socialites does not make anything easier I m pretty sure that every girl woman out there will be able to relate to some aspect of Kate s life Kate is a newly single mother, unemployed and desperate to make ends meet, but perhaps the most important thing about Kate is her obsession with doughnuts, and let s be honest ladies, we can all relate to that one Not only that, but Kate gets a blast from the past when one of her fellow Wives turns out to be her high school nemesis, which I can only imagine would be like reliving a nightmare. This story is quite compact as there are only a few characters and the setting doesn t change all that much however, this just makes for a intimate and detailed story Although Kate is the protagonist and the story is written from her POV, it is also easy to relate to many of the other characters Those that at first looked like they led perfect lives, may actually be scratched under the surface. This is quite a short novel, but there s a lot of action nonetheless The story gets off to a slow start, but the pace soon picks up and it s a rollercoaster from there This story has aspects of romance, family and friend drama You really go on a journey with Kate as she wades through a difficult period in her life trying to figure out who she really needs and wants in her life, and who is just using her to get what they want Kate is a real 3 D character and you see her character develop and progress throughout the novel. It was quite interesting to read about reality TV, and it s not something I ve ever come across before It portrayed the reality TV industry pretty much exactly how I d imagined it to be, but the drama was far exciting The popularity of shows like Jersey Shore and Made In Chelsea is rising every single day and the question about whether these shows truly are reality is still prevalent so it was interesting to see what the daily life of a reality TV show star would actually be like.At a time when the recession is really cutting into everyone s pockets and money is short, this novel could not be appropriate Coupled with the fact that reality TV or should I say reality TV is rapidly rising as a top form of entertainment, this is an incredibly current novel that I m sure most women will be able to relate to This is a fab book for any woman looking for a quick and entertaining read Kate s story will no doubt steal your sympathies and you ll be turning page after page trying to find out how her story ends More reviews at Kate Ryan had a great life She was a Wall Street attorney, her husband was a Managing Director at a Wall Street investment bank, and a home on the North Shore of Long Island But when the investment bank went bankrupt, her husband decided to visit his grandmother in Ireland Five months later, Jim had not returned, she was unemployed, and she had bills than money Then a chance for short term financial security came her way A local cable TV channel is developing a reality show, Gold Coast Wives Kate is offered one of the roles on the show It seems like easy money, at first How bad could a reality show on a local channel be Recently, I had the opportunity to read and review Ms Walsh s second novel, The House on Prospect Because it was so well written and enjoyable, I jumped at the chance to review Gold Coast Wives I was not disappointed In this novel, she depicts reality shows so, well, realistically that it left me laughing out loud All the behind the scenes plotting, scheming, and planning was just as I ve always thought reality shows would be I think there s a bit of Kate in all of us When she talks about the other wives behind their backs, calls them names, and eats doughnuts while having a pity party, it s still easy to like her There is a pattern here Although the settings are completely different, Ms Walsh has now produced two novels in which the protagonist is a mature woman who faces drastic changes in her life and manages to emerge stronger If she continues to write characters like Kate Ryan, I look forward to her future work.Disclosure of Material Connection I received this book free from the publisher through Reading Addiction book review bloggers program I was Gold Coast Wives is like a snap shot of those Real Housewives reality shows I d never watch them, but I had to read the book. Why After reading Bernadette s A House On Prospect, I was interested in seeing. She writes Gold Coast Wives just the way you d expect this kind of reality show to play out There s petty bickering, jealousy and backstabbing None of it is Kate though She s getting the bad end of the stick in this case.If I had to put up with some of the things she had to for the show, I would have broken my contract and left But that s what makes the book so fun It almost makes me wish it were a show, so I could watch it Actually, it could be a sitcom about a reality show This is the perfect beach read Light, fluffy and fun Bernadette Walsh is officially one of my new favorite authors Pull up a chair and a fruity drink and this is a recipe for a great afternoon This book starts out with Kate talking about how the economy had not just taken a downward twirl but how she has lost almost everything Including her husband, entire savings, even her career as a lawyer is now gone Somehow, Kate connects with an old friend who puts her in touch with someone who offers her a part in a new reality television show This show will be aired on the local cable channels. This was a great book I really liked how strong the character Kate was She never allowed herself to be pulled down in the swirl of everything happening She kept going strong no matter what. There is just one problem with this I do not know how to write this review without giving away everything about this book I have tried writing this review several different ways and I keep ending up giving away the plot.I know this is a horrible review and I apologize to the author but I had rather write something like this than write a review that gives away everything about the book If I did that then no one would want to read the book.If you enjoy chick lit books then this is the book for you.Drama, backstabbing, and some over the hill women trying to still be the 16 year old home coming queen sums up this book for me Read it you will laugh, and wonder if you are like any of these women Or maybe you will see the actions of these women in some of your friends. Ok truthfully I thought this might be a really cheesy book, but I was surprisingly and pleasantly surprised I really enjoyed the book This book has the story lines like the reality TV shows I don t watch the Housewives ones, but maybe I will now after reading this book Women are brutal Bernadette Walsh really describes the characters in the book very well, like you re right there in the middle of the fun It could definitely be a series If you like a little smut, light hearted, back stabbing and a great read, pick your copy up today It will surprise you I can t wait to read from Bernadette Walsh Gold Coast Wives was an very entertaining book that was a really fun quick read Kate Ryan goes from a high powered lawery to reality TV to enduring the challenges with the ups and downs from those around her From the beginning to the end, these characters will have you either loving them or hating them. Being a fan of the shenanigans that regularly go down on the various Real Housewives series and reality tv in general, really , Gold Coast Wives by Bernadette Walsh jumped out at me as soon as I saw it From the stylized cover to the description of the catty co stars, I had a feeling I was in for a fun ride with this book and I was not disappointed Gold Coast Wives follows Kate Ryan, a down on her luck lawyer who lands on the titular TV show as the everywoman foil to the other three, glamorous wives Recently out of a job and deserted by her globetrotting husband, Kate agrees to do the show as a way to make ends meet for her and her daughter, with no idea of the rollercoaster she s embarking on She quickly butts heads with the other cast members, including Tina the aging soap star, Rachel who runs a cat rescue organization called LICKs, and Pamela the queen bee whose perfect life is just a facade The story unfolds over the course of the show s filming, eventual release and pickup by a nationwide network Not only does Kate have to contend with the other wives and the unblinking eye of the network cameras, but also her budding feelings for Paul, a man she met while filming the show, and the various people in her life who are desperate for their fifteen minutes of fame And despite the challenges she s dealt throughout the course of the book, Kate eventually comes out on top thanks to a few clauses in her contract that a network executive failed to read What I really enjoyed about Gold Coast Wives was the blending of the TV show s production with the romantic comedy genre The little tricks that the producers used throughout filming the show to make Kate the outcast of the group were particularly nasty, but made it that much sweeter when Kate eventually gained the upper hand I also really liked how the romance that unfolds over the course of the book is so organically woven into the overall story Kate doesn t just fall for a new guy while her soon to be ex is on the other side of the world her feelings are complicated and the story doesn t just gloss over them, which is nice Gold Coast Wives is a lighthearted, fun read that left me both hoping for a sequel covering the second season and wishing this was a show I could actually watch I really enjoyed this book It was a light fun read and a a departure from my normal genre I think Bernadette Walsh should be writing for some of the top Hollywood Soaps The book has a over the top yet everyday feel to the characters Give this book a try.
